What Is HEMA?
Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) is the study and practice of historical European swordsmanship and combat systems developed from real historical manuals dating from the medieval, Renaissance, and early modern periods. Drawing from traditions such as Italian longsword, German longsword, rapier fencing, sword and buckler, and other historical weapons systems, HEMA combines athletic training, martial arts, technical skill, and historical research into a modern combat sport and martial discipline. These systems were originally developed for self-defense, dueling, military training, and personal combat long before modern firearms reshaped warfare.
Today, HEMA has evolved into a fast-growing international sport practiced by athletes, martial artists, performers, and sword enthusiasts around the world. Training develops coordination, agility, timing, reaction speed, body control, and tactical decision-making through structured drills, sparring, and technical instruction using modern protective equipment and safety standards. Here at Swordplay LA, our HEMA classes in Los Angeles and Burbank offer beginner-friendly and competitive training in longsword, rapier, messer, dagger, grappling, and historical combat systems within a welcoming and modern training environment. Whether students are looking for historical sword fighting classes, HEMA sparring, martial arts cross-training, or a unique athletic community in Los Angeles, HEMA offers a dynamic blend of history, fitness, combat sports, and technical skill development.
